About NH Education Apprenticeships: What is NH REAP?

The New Hampshire Registered Education Apprenticeship Program (NH REAP) is the only U.S. Department of Labor-approved Education Apprenticeship Program in New Hampshire.

The National Collaborative for Digital Equity (NCDE) launched this initiative to address New Hampshire’s K12 educator workforce needs and offers comprehensive services for future educators at the pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship levels.

NCDE launched the program because the K12 educator workforce is in crisis, with too many teaching and paraprofessional vacancies, not enough future educators entering the pipeline into the profession through traditional preparation programs, and a longstanding lack of diverse educators to better meet the needs of New Hampshire’s increasingly diverse K12 student population.

Research confirms that diversifying the educator workforce contributes significantly to the retention and graduation rates of diverse learners and their achievement levels.

Why An Apprenticeship Approach to Addressing K12 Educator Workforce Needs?

Through a USDOL-approved apprenticeship program, future educators have access to more financial supports to reduce their costs to earn certification and enter the profession. We’ve already seen that NCDE’s relentless commitment to minimizing the costs for apprentices to begin and complete their preparation contributes significantly to diversifying the future NH educator workforce.

In addition, apprenticeship programs, by definition, focus as much on equipping you with real-world practical experience in the profession, mentored by experienced professionals, as on classroom learning to equip you with the concepts and skills you’ll need to meet the needs of today’s K12 learners.

The Importance of Personalized Advisement

For those participants who need to complete an undergraduate degree in order to become certified, NCDE is in constant communication with NH’s state approved educator preparation programs and degree-granting institutions to alert you to the comparative costs of these alternatives, so you can make a well-informed decision.

We also advise you about those specific credentials you may wish to acquire that are most in demand in NH. Similarly, we get to know each participant so that we can support you, as needed, to refresh your “study skills.”

Every participant develops a personalized course of study suited to your schedule and competing commitments (family obligations, a paraprofessional position you may be holding now, etc.).

Meeting the Needs of Today’s Digital Age Learners

  • Digital Access: NH REAP is committed to ensuring every participant themselves has access to a personal computer and affordable broadband, and is equipped to identify and address the digital divide challenges your future K12 students may face at home.
  • Digital Skills: The program will equip you with the knowledge, skills and tools to in turn equip your future K12 students with digital literacy, media literacy, AI, cybersafety and financial literacy skills.
  • Digital Pedagogy: We’ll also familiarize you with best practices in facilitating online and hybrid learning, helping protect your future K12 students from the negative impacts of too much “screen time” on their own social network and device addiction, and how to employ highly engaging competency-based learning facilitation strategies in your own classroom practice.
